Gross domestic product, the total value of everything bought and sold, is the number governments, markets, and headlines use to define progress. It says nothing about what was taken from the ground to produce it.
The chart below tracks GDP against the material footprint, the raw materials a growing economy actually consumes, both indexed to 1990. If growth were decoupling from resource use, the two lines would pull apart. They haven't.
